Flipping the classroom

Today, some of our students in 1st ESO A have explained the grammar topic to the rest of the class.

Each of the components of the group prepared a part of the explanation: the use of a, an, the, some and any. 

The students prepared the topic at home, explained the theory in the classroom and corrected the exercises with the rest of the class.

It was funnier than listening to the teacher the whole time....

Epals Exchange: Presentation II

The teacher says an action and we have to do it.

Epals Exchange: Presentation I

Today we start our epal exchange between 1st ESO A, B with the subject of AMPLIACIÓN DE INGLÉS and a school in Hannover, USA.

We are talking to 2 classes: GAUDI and PATITOS

They are studying 1st year of ESPAÑOL. They are from RICHMOND MIDDLE SCHOOL.

One of their teachers is called Sarah Mills.

MIND YOUR LANGUAGE

            

Class 1A of Bachaloriat at IES Antigua Sexi, last week, watched an episode of “MIND YOUR LANGUAGE” .  A comedy British series from the 70s.

“MIND YOUR LANGUAGE” is about a group on international students learning English in a classroom environment. These students have a low level understanding of the English language, which makes a lot of the responses to dialogues in class unintentionally humorous for example one of the students would say “squeeze me” instead of “excuse me”.

Season 1 Episode 1 is about how everyone introduces themselves by saying their names, nationalities and jobs, this was a challenge indeed for both the students and the teacher.

After watching the episode the students of class 1A were instructed to answer a series of questions about the episode which were then debated in group.

This series has a very old fashioned humor which in my opinion nowadays can be interpreted in the wrong way. I think that because of how society is constructed now, some of the things talked about in the dialogue of this series for example the actor of Indian decent says stuff that in the twenty first century can be thought   racist and inappropriate, to me this is crazy but it is because in the modern era we take everything that is perfectly normal and supposed to be funny way out of proportion which to me is a complete and utter shame.

All in all I liked the episode that we watched, I thought it very amusing and enjoyable. I like watching “old” comedies that are before my time because I find that they can teach you a lot about what use to be funny or generally what use to be.

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”

Which is why I think it is important to learn these things about our past wether its silly jokes or something much more important.

Lectura Compartida

In this session, we did a Reading Comprehension of a text of the Student Book. We followed a technique of "Lectura Compartida", following the theory of cooperative work.

We split up the text into 4 parts.

We worked in groups of 4.


Each one read a apart, made a summary of another student, make a question and give an answer.

We then made the exercises of the activity.

It was fun to work in groups.

Speed date

Two weeks ago in English class, we did a very fun activity:  Speed dating!

Each student had to create a real or fictional character (with a name, age, hobbies, interests, etc.) to participate in the speed dating activity. Each person was assigned a number to help with identifying potential couples. Some students used their own names and others got very creative, from anthropologists to authors there was a very diverse group of individuals looking for love.

The activity worked in the following manner: The class tables were split into groups of two, a female character would sit at one of the tables and the other table would be left open for their date. The girls stayed at the same table throughout the whole session. All of the male characters sat down at a random table to begin their first date. Each round of dates lasted 2 minutes, making speed dating live up to its name! After each round, the boys would get up and sit with a new partner.

During the dates, the couples discussed interests and learned about each other -  all in English of course. Each person was given a page with a few questions to help them out but most of the time the conversations were very organic and the time flew by! The rounds weren’t too short though, 2 minutes is the perfect amount of time to get the basic information about someone and show them who you are without being too long, it was a very smart decision by the organizer, Lorena.

Personally, I had a blast during the speed date activity! It was a great ice breaker for meeting new students in class and a very fun and engaging way to practice our English. It worked out very well, we ended up doing over 15 rounds!

Overall it was a very entertaining way to start a new school year and everyone had a great time.

We interacted with more participants. Boys had to swap womens´ tables each 7 minutes.

At the end we had to write a conclusion on our final preferences.
